H2Okies open 2016-17 season at the FGCU Classic

BLACKSBURG -- 24 swimmers representing the Virginia Tech swimming and diving program will head to Fort Meyers, Florida for the FGCU Classic that kicks of tomorrow, Oct. 7, at 5 p.m. and concludes Saturday with competition beginning at 10:30 a.m.

The competition includes swimmers from LSU, Ohio State, Rutgers and Utah. All events are expected to go on as planned despite the presence of Hurricane Matthew. Updates on the action can be found on the FGCU Classic tournament central page above.

Junior Klaudia Nazieblo and senior Jessica Hespeler are coming off All-American seasons and will will lead the H2Okie women this weekend while seniors Brandon Fiala and Robert Owen, both returning from career years collegiately and in Olympic Trials, lead the men for head coach Ned Skinner. This weekend will also be the first collegiate action for freshmen Eleanor Matheson and Hassler Carroll, two talented newcomers that Skinner expects to compete immediately.

Both programs finished in the top 25 at NCAA Championships last season as the women placed in a tie for 25th and the men placed 19th. It marked the fourth time in program history and the fourth time in the last five seasons that both squads finished among the top programs in the country.

After returning from Florida, the H2Okies will hold its first home meet of the season against Penn State on Saturday, Oct. 15 at 11 a.m. at the Christiansburg Aquatics Center.
