The Virginia Tech men’s golf team posted a two-round total of 6-under 570 on Monday and is tied with Maryland and Coastal Carolina entering the final round of the Janney Invitational. The two-day event, hosted by VCU, is being played at the par 72, 6,927-yard Tuckahoe Creek at the Country Club of Virginia.
Tech, the defending champion of the tournament, shot a 284 in the morning round and followed that with a 286 in the afternoon. The Hokies were in second place after the first round.
Connor Burgess, a freshman from Lynchburg, Virginia, shot a two-round total of 7-under 137 and is tied for second place. He is in a four-way tie for second and the group is one stroke behind leader Conor Purcell of Charlotte. Burgess shot a 67 in the morning round and followed that with a 70 on Monday afternoon. He had five birdies and an eagle in the morning and three birdies in the afternoon.
Sarit Suwannarut, a sophomore from Bangkok, Thailand, is tied for ninth place at 141 and Ian Hildebrand, a senior from Purcellville, Virginia, is tied for 27th at 145. Blake Fiest, a junior from Huntersville, North Carolina, is tied for 39th at 147 and Slade Pickering, a freshman from North West, South Africa, is 71st at 159. Suwannarut also had an eagle on Monday and broke par in both of Monday’s rounds.
Dan Woodbury, a senior from Upton, Massachusetts is playing the tournament as an individual. He is 72nd at 163.
West Virginia has the lead entering the final round. The Mountaineers posted a 15-under 561 and leads Charlotte by three strokes and the Hokies, Terrapins and Chanticleers by nine strokes. James Madison is sixth at 575, Radford is seventh at 576, Rutgers is eighth at 577 and host VCU is ninth at 578. George Washington is 10th at 581, ODU is 11th at 586 and Richmond is 12th at 590.
The final round will be played on Tuesday. There will be a shotgun start at 8:45 a.m. and the Hokies will be grouped with Coastal Carolina and James Madison. Live stats are available on Hokiesports.com via a link from Golfstat.com.
