Hokies finish seventh at Grandover

The Virginia Tech men’s golf team posted a three round total of 898 and finishes in seventh place at the UNCG Grandover Collegiate on Sunday afternoon. The two-day event was played at the par 72, 7,245-yard East Course at the Grandover Resort in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Tech shot a 311 in the first round and followed that by improving 15 strokes to a 296 in Saturday afternoon’s second round. On Sunday, the Hokies improved another five strokes to 291, the fourth-best round of the day.

Blake Fiest, a junior from Huntersville, North Carolina, continued his strong fall play. He finished in sixth place with a 1-over 217, eight strokes behind medalist Dylan Wu of Northwestern. The sixth place finish was his career-best and his first-ever top 10 finish. He has six par-or-better rounds in his last 10 rounds.

Mark Lawrence Jr., a junior from Richmond, Virginia, finished in a tie for 17th at 223 and Sarit Suwannarut, a sophomore from Bangkok, Thailand, tied for 33rd at 228. Connor Burgess, a freshman from Lynchburg, Virginia, tied for 41st at 230 and Slade Pickering, a freshman from North West, South Africa, finished in 72nd place at 247. Lawrence eagles the par 5, 570-yard 18th hole today

Three Hokies played the tournament as individuals. Ian Hildebrand, a senior from Purcellville, Virginia, tied for 51st at 232, Dan Woodbury, a senior from Upton, Massachusetts finished in 65th place at 239 and Tom Crow, a sophomore from Virginia Beach, Virginia, finished in 74th place at 250.

Northwestern shot the day’s best round, a 286 and took the team title with a score of 9-over 873, two strokes ahead of North Carolina and six strokes ahead of Duke. NC State was fourth at 890, host UNC Greensboro was fifth at 895 and Georgia State was sixth at 897, one stroke ahead of the Hokies. Kansas State was eighth at 899, Loyola of Maryland was ninth at 919 and VCU was 10th at 924.

This was the final event for the Hokies in the fall portion of the schedule. Tech will return to action on Feb. 18-20 at the Puerto Rico Classic, at the Rio Mar Country Club in San Juan Puerto Rico.
