NEW ORLEANS – Following a weekend of 13 first-place finishes at the Roanoke Tune-Up, the Virginia Tech track and field teams moved up seven spots each in the latest United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Indoor Computer Rankings, as announced by the organization Monday afternoon.
The women’s team jumped up to No. 15, its highest ranking of the season, while the men’s squad moved up to No. 17. The Hokies are the lone school from the ACC to have both teams ranked inside the Top 25.
Florida State (No. 7) and Syracuse (9) sit above Tech on the men’s side, and the women are the only ranked team from the ACC.
Last weekend, the DMR groups on both sides took first place, as the men, made up of Neil Gourley, Greg Chiles, Patrick Joseph and Vincent Ciattei, posted a time of a 9 minutes, 36.31 seconds, while the women, consisting of Rachel Pocratsky, Arlicia Bush, Laurie Barton and Katie Kennedy, clocked a time of 11:08.48.
Both times rank as some of the nation’s best, with and without conversion times. The women’s time was a school record, topping the previous best time of 11:10.84 (J. Fanning, S. Green, A. Washington and T. Fanning) set in 2007.
The men and women own exactly 16 times and marks that rank in the top 50 across the nation.
Next up for Tech will be the ACC Indoor Championships at Clemson from Feb. 22-24.
