No. 9 Hokies set for big weekend

BLACKSBURG – Going into its most highly-competitive weekend of the season, the Virginia Tech track and field teams will split up and head to two SEC schools in Arkansas and Vanderbilt and make another trek down south to Clemson.

The Hokies will compete against a combined 29 ranked teams on both of the men and women’s sides. At the Tiger Paw Invitational on the campus of Clemson at the Clemson is where the sprints/hurdles and multi-events/jumps and select throwers will be. The Music City Challenge, hosted by Vanderbilt, will be where the distance group goes, and the pole vault group will head to Arkansas for the Tyson Invitational.

All three invites will be two-day meets starting on Friday. The Tyson Invitational will be the lone meet for the Hokies that will be streamed live on air, broadcasting on the SEC Network +.

The last time out, the Hokies split up and went to three meets, including the Akron, Camel City and Rod McCravy invites. Sophomore Sara Freix and redshirt sophomore Jack Joyce both placed first in the 3,000 meters on Feb. 2 and sixteen top-five finishes on Feb. 3 headlined Week 4 of the season.

In the men’s mile, Vincent Ciattei (3:59.57) and Patrick Joseph (3:59.59) ran sub four-minute miles at the JDL Fast Track. Both times rank in the top-10 nationally. In the women’s mile, Katie Kennedy ran the second-fastest time in school with a time of 4 minutes, 39.97 seconds.

The men were tabbed No. 9 in the country earlier this week, according to the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), the best ranking from the ACC. The women came in at No. 37, which is also the highest ranking in the league.

In the ACC, Tech boasts 31 top-10 times and marks in the conference, while it owns 15 times and marks that rank in the top-50 nationwide.
