The Virginia Tech men's golf team has a two-round total of 16-over 592 and is tied for 10th place with Kent State at the General Hackler Championship on Saturday. The two-day event is being played at the par 72, 7,233-yard Dunes Golf & Beach Club in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
The Hokies shot an even-par 288 in the morning's round and followed that with a 304 in the afternoon's round. Tech was tied for fourth place after the first round.
Mark Lawrence Jr., leads the Hokies individually. The junior from Richmond, Virginia, has a two-round total of 2-under 142 and is tied for seventh place. He trail leader Philip Barbaree of LSU by just three strokes. Lawrence led after the first round, when he shot a 6-under 66, the best round of the day. The 66 is one stroke off the tournament record and is the lowest round ever by a Virginia Tech golfer in this event. It is also tied for Lawrence's low round as a Hokie and the low round of this season by a Hokie.
Ian Hildebrand, a senior from Purcellville, Virginia, is tied for 31st at 147 and Tom Crow, a sophomore from Virginia Beach, Virginia, is tied for 58th at 151. Connor Burgess, a freshman from Lynchburg, Virginia, is tied for 69th at 153 and Slade Pickering, a freshman from North West, South Africa, is tied for 79th at 156. Blake Fiest, a junior from Huntersville, North Carolina, was scheduled to play the tournament as an individual, but was forced to withdraw this morning due to illness.
Georgia Tech holds the lead entering Sunday's final round. The Yellow Jackets posted a two-round total of 9-under 567, two strokes better than Texas A&M and nine strokes better than Kentucky. LSU and Virginia are tied for fourth at 581, NC State is sixth at 582, South Carolina is seventh at 584, East Carolina is eighth at 588 and North Florida is ninth at 590, two strokes ahead of the Hokies and Golden Flashes. Princeton is 12th at 593, Liberty and East Tennessee State are tied for 13th at94 and host Coastal Carolina is 15th at 600.
