Hokies begin spring practice, ushering in season three under Justin Fuente

BLACKSBURG – Head coach Justin Fuente and the Hokies took the field on Saturday morning for the start of spring practice and followed up with another on-field session on Sunday. Both of those sessions were in shorts and helmets. In addition to numerous prospects visiting campus over the weekend, 2018 Tech signees DeJuan Ellis and Dax Hollifield were also in the Beamer Barn observing practice, along with former Tech standouts like Andrew Motuapuaka, Terrell Edmunds, Greg Stroman and Tim Settle.

The squad is off with no lifting or practice on Monday before resuming their schedule on Tuesday as the Hokies will add shells under their jerseys as the tempo goes up another step. Coach Fuente and the squad are also slated for practices on Thursday and Saturday this week. We're expecting to hear from Fuente, QB Josh Jackson, DL Ricky Walker and other players prior to Thursday's session.

Spring football will come to a crescendo with the 2018 Spring Game on Saturday, April 14.

O-Line Observations
With the graduation of Eric Gallo, who started 38 games at center over the past three seasons, the Hokies are in the market for a new starter at that position. After recently being granted a medical redshirt to give him a sixth season of eligibility, Kyle Chung will get a good look at that spot in the spring.

"I'm really proud of him maturing and turning the corner," Fuente said of Chung last week. "He has graduated from college and did well in the classroom last fall as a guy who has already earned a degree. We will move him around and will probably start him with snapping the ball a little bit. We will see if we can move him back inside and be productive there."

ICYMI on Friday, a total of 28 players received hard hats from Ben Hilgart for their work in the winter conditioning program. Senior RB Steven Peoples from Galax, Virginia was crowned the overall hard hat champion. The complete list of Tech's off-season ironmen is below.
