The Virginia Tech men's golf team posted a three round total of 3-over 867 and finished in third place at the Furman Intercollegiate on Sunday. The three-day event was played at the par 72, 6,994-yard Furman University Golf Course in Greenville, South Carolina.
Tech posted a 1-over 289 on Friday and followed that with a 291 in the second round on Saturday. The Hokies completed the tournament with a 1-under 287 on Sunday Saturday's second round was suspended due to lightning, but was completed on Sunday morning.
Ian Hildebrand led the Hokies at Furman. The senior from Purcellville, Virginia, has a three round total of 4-under 212 and tied for 3rd place, five strokes behind leader Phillip Knowles of North Florida. This is Hildebrand's best finish as a Hokie and his 3-under 69 on Sunday is tied for his low round at Virginia Tech and was the Hokies' best round on Sunday.
Mark Lawrence Jr., a junior from Richmond, Virginia, tied for 11th at 1-under 215 and Connor Burgess, a freshman from Lynchburg, Virginia, tied for 22nd at 219. Slade Pickering, a freshman from North West, South Africa, tied for 28th at 221 and Blake Fiest, a junior from Huntersville, North Carolina, tied for 76th at 230.
Three Hokies played at Furman as individuals. Joey Jordan, a junior from Richmond, making his collegiate debut, tied for 16th place at 1-over 217. He carded a 3-under 69 on Saturday and was second among 18 players that competed as individuals. Dan Woodbury, a senior from Upton, Massachusetts tied for 96th at 234 and Tom Crow, a sophomore from Virginia Beach, Virginia, tied for 106th at 237.
North Florida won the tournament with a 17-under 847, 18 strokes ahead of runner-up West Virginia and 20 strokes ahead of the Hokies. USC Aiken and host Furman tied for fourth at 875, Yale was sixth at 879, James Madison was seventh at 883, Gardner-Webb and Francis Marion tied for eighth at 884 and Akron was 10th at 893. In all, 21 teams competed in the three-day event.
The Hokies return to action this coming weekend, as they travel to Augusta, Georgia to compete in the 3M Augusta Invitational. The two-day event, which annually draws a top-level field, will be played at the Forest Hills Golf Club in Augusta.
