GREENSBORO, N.C. – Rachel Baxter of Virginia Tech's track and field team has been named ACC Women's Field Performer of the Week, as announced by the league office Tuesday afternoon.
The freshman posted the third-best mark in school history at the Tennessee Relays last weekend, clearing a height 4.30 meters (14 feet, 1.25 inches) in the pole vault to place first. The honor marks her first weekly honor from the conference office. She joins fellow freshman Lisa Gunnarsson as the other Hokie to be selected for the weekly award this outdoor season.
Baxter's mark in Knoxville was a season best and tied her top mark from the indoor season, which was set at the ACC Indoor Championships on Feb. 23 when she earned a silver medal. The mark sits seventh nationally and third in the league.
The California native earned second-team All-America honors during the indoor season, placing 11th. Baxter sits tied for fourth all time in school history for the best indoor mark.
Four others were selected by the ACC for the weekly awards, including Florida State's Andre Ewers and North Carolina's Kenny Selmon (Co-Men Track), Louisville's Damar Robinson (Men Field) and Miami's Kayla Harris (Women Track).
The Hokies will be back in action on Thursday, competing at the Mt. SAC Relays in California. They will also compete at the Beach Invitational in the Golden State, as well as the Duke Invitational and War Eagle Classic from Friday through Saturday.
