The Virginia Tech men's golf team shot an opening round 7-over 295 on Friday and is in 12th place at the 2018 ACC Men's Golf Championship. The three-day event is being played at the par 72, 7,102-yard Old North State Club at Uwharrie Point in New London, North Carolina.
Mark Lawrence Jr., a junior from Richmond, Virginia, is tied for 12th place with a 3-under 69. He trails leaders Danny Walker of Virginia and Luke Schniederjans of Georgia Tech by four strokes. Lawrence had four birdies and a single bogey on Friday.
Slade Pickering, a freshman from North West, South Africa, is tied for 31st place at 73 and Ian Hildebrand, a senior from Purcellville, Virginia, is tied for 48th place at 76. Joey Jordan, a junior from Richmond, Virginia, is tied for 51st at 77 and Connor Burgess, a freshman from Lynchburg, Virginia is in 60th place at 79.
Georgia Tech holds the team lead after the first round at 12-under 276, one stroke ahead of Notre Dame. Clemson is third at 279, Wake Forest is fourth at 281 and Florida Stateis fifth at 282. North Carolina is sixth at 283, Virginia is seventh at 284, NC State is eighth at 285 and Duke is ninth at 286. Louisville is 10th at 291 and Boston College is 11th at 292, three strokes ahead of the Hokies.
The second round will be played on Saturday. The Hokies will be grouped with Louisville and Boston College and will begin on the 10th tee, beginning at 10 a.m. Live scoring is available on Hokiesports.com, via a link from Golfstat.com.
