Green, Harrison, Piazza advance at USATF Outdoor Championships

DES MOINES, Iowa – Virginia Tech track and field alums Hanna Green, Queen Harrison and Drew Piazza qualified for the next round in their respective events on Friday at the USATF Outdoor Championships at Drake Stadium.
 
Harrison began the day for the former Hokies in the first round of the 100-meter hurdles and did not disappoint, crossing the finish line in 12.66 seconds to place second in her heat and overall.

Green of Nike OTCE clocked a faster 400 split than she did yesterday, going 59.28 and followed with a 1:01.42 to finish in a personal-best time of 2:00.69, finishing sixth overall and fourth in her heat in the semifinals of the 800-meter race.

Piazza ran faster as well in the 800 semifinals, recording a time of 53:08 the first 400 and closing with a 54.62 for a total time of 1:47.69 to place 10th overall and fourth in his heat.

The four-day meet continues on Saturday starting with the women's heptathlon at 11 a.m. Green and Piazza will get the day off, while Deakin Volz competes in the pole vault at 2:30 p.m. and Harrison will run in the semifinals at 3:20 p.m. If Harrison qualifies for the finals, she will run on national television later in the day at 5:52 p.m. on NBC.
