Karlie Johnson scores again as Tech ends nonconference slate with 2-0 win over ETSU

BLACKSBURG – Gearing up for ACC play that begins at the end of the week, the Virginia Tech women's soccer team remained unbeaten in its third straight match and won its second straight as the Hokies upended visiting ETSU, 2-0, at Thompson Field on Monday night to finish out its regular-season nonconference schedule.

The Hokies (4-1-3) also notched their third straight shutout as goalkeeper Mandy McGlynn notched her fourth shutout of the season and the 16th of her Tech career. McGlynn has now gone more than 364 consecutive minutes without surrendering a goal and the three straight shutouts ties her career long.

On the offensive side, Karlie Johnson scored her team-leading fourth goal of the season in the 34th minute as she took a pass from Kristina Diana and beat Buccaneer goalkeeper Lea Ann Cutshall to give Tech a 1-0 lead. The tally would hold as Johnson notched her first game-winning goal of the year.

Clinging to the one-goal advantage, the Hokies added an insurance goal in the 82nd minute to all but seal the contest. Off a Kelsey Irwin free kick, Lilly Weber scored her first of the season, the second of her career. For Irwin, she sits second on the team in points with five, behind Johnson's eight on the year.
