The Virginia Tech women's golf team shot an opening round 9-over 297 and is in seventh place at the Golfweek Conference Challenge. The three-day tournament is being played at the par 72, 6,216-yard Red Sky Golf Club's Fazio Course in Wolcott, Colorado, near Vail.
Jessica Spicer, a sophomore from Bahama, North Carolina, shot an even-par 72 and is tied for 15th individually. Spicer is four strokes behind a quartet of players in at 4-under.
Emily Mahar, a sophomore from Brisbane, Australia and Elizabeth Bose, a senior from Norfolk, Virginia, are tied for 27th at 74. Amanda Hollandsworth, a graduate student from Floyd, Virginia is tied for 54th at 77 and Keera Foocharoen, a freshman from Bangkok, Thailand, is tied for 73rd at 80.
UCLA leads with an 11-under 277, nine strokes ahead of Campbell and 10 strokes ahead of Pepperdine. Denver is fourth at 293, TCU is fifth at 294 and East Tennessee State is sixth at 296, one stroke ahead of the Hokies. Georgia is eighth at 298, SMU is ninth at 299 and Sacramento State rounds out the top 10 at 302. The 18-team event features teams from 18 NCAA Division I conferences
The second round will be played on Tuesday, followed by the final round on Wednesday. The Hokies will tee off at 10 a.m. MT (noon ET) grouped with Georgia and SMU. Live scoring is available from a link on the women's golf schedule page of Hokiesports.com, via a link from Golfstat.com.
