TOPICS THEY'RE TALKING ABOUT
- Maturity – The Hokies are poised to continue their positive momentum after such a successful postseason run in 2018, charging all the way to the WNIT championship. Every contributing student-athlete from that team is back again for this season, a 2018-19 that has expectations, for the first time in a while in Blacksburg. Led by redshirt seniors Magarity and Camp as well as Emery, a senior, this year's Hokies have a solid leadership group.
- Youth – Tech also welcomed two freshmen into the fold, Dara Mabrey and Shaniya Jones, both highly touted guards. The name Mabrey should be familiar to basketball fans, as her older sister Marina is a guard on the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, a team that takes a trip to Cassell Coliseum on Jan. 16.
- The Brooks family around campus – Not only has Coach Brooks had his oldest daughter Kendyl on the roster since he got to Blacksburg, but this summer the Hokies welcomed the addition of his second daughter, Chloe. The 5-foot-10 guard was a standout in high school for Spotswood, helping the team to a Virginia state title.
MILESTONES THE HOKIES ARE APPROACHING
- Already the program's all-time leader in rebounds, Magarity is poised to become the first woman at Virginia Tech to secure 1,000 rebounds. The forward has already gone over 1,000 career points and is in the top 10 of the career charts in blocks as well.
- Emery's 667 points a season ago was the most in a single season at Tech, but her next milestone may be even more impressive. When she cracks the 1,000-point plateau she will become just the second Hokie to ever reach that mark in any two-year stretch, the other being Renee Dennis the all-time leading scorer.
- Camp, a fifth-year player also appears destined to join that elite list as a 1,000-point scorer. She owns the most points in a single game of any current Hokie, dropping 33 on Western Carolina in 2015.
The Hokies begin their season at home on Carilion Clinic Court at Cassell Coliseum on Tuesday, Nov. 6 against the USC Upstate Spartans, with tip slated for 7 p.m. on ACC Network Extra.
