Hokies finish 13th at the Puerto Rico Classic

Tuesday - Final Round

The Virginia Tech men's golf team posted a three-round total of 882 and finished in 13th place at the Puerto Rico Classic on Tuesday. The three-day event was played at the 6,902-yard, par 72 River Course of the Wyndham Rio Mar Country Club in Rio Mar, Puerto Rico.
 
Bradley de Beer, a freshman from Western Cape, South Africa, tied for 26th individually to lead the Hokies. It was his best intercollegiate finish. He finished with a 1-over 217, seven strokes behind co-medalists, Bryson Nimmer of Clemson, Benjamin Shipp of NC State and Marcus Byrd of Middle Tennessee State. De Beer shot a 1-under 71 on Tuesday.
 
Connor Burgess, a sophomore from Lynchburg, Virginia, tied for 36th at 219 and Connor Johnson Jr., a freshman from Richmond, Virginia tied for 54th at 224. Joey Jordan, a senior from Richmond, Virginia, tied for 60th at 227 and Slade Pickering, a sophomore from North West, South Africa, tied for 68th at 231.
 
Georgia Tech and Georgia shared the team title with 16-under 848s, four strokes ahead of Oklahoma and eighth strokes ahead of NC State. Host Purdue was fifth at 859, Clemson was sixth at 863, Iowa was seventh at 871 and Marquette was eighth at 874. Ohio State was ninth at 876, UNC Greensboro was 10th at 878 and Middle Tennessee State and Alabama tied for 11th at 879, three strokes ahead of the Hokies. East Carolina and Maryland tied for 14th at 883.
                                 
The tournament annually attracts one of the top fields in collegiate golf. This year, four teams are ranked in the top 15 nationally, including No. 4 Georgia Tech and No. 5 Alabama.
 
The Hokies return to action March 15-17, as they compete in the Schenkel Invitational. The three-day tournament will be played at the Forest Heights Country Club in Statesboro, Georgia and is hosted by Georgia Southern.

Monday - Second Round

The Virginia Tech men's golf team has a two-round total of 591 and is in 13th place entering the final round of the Puerto Rico Classic. The three-day event is being played at the 6,902-yard, par 72 River Course of the Wyndham Rio Mar Country Club in Rio Mar, Puerto Rico.
 
Bradley de Beer, a freshman from Western Cape, South Africa, and Connor Burgess, a sophomore from Lynchburg, Virginia are tied for 29th place individually at 2-over 146. Burgess shot a 1-under 71 on Monday and de Beer shot an even-par 72 in the second round. They are seven strokes behind a quartet of leaders at 5-under 139. Burgess had an eagle-3 on the 575-yard par 5 fourth hole.
 
Connor Johnson Jr., a freshman from Richmond, Virginia is tied for 50th at 151 and Slade Pickering, a sophomore from North West, South Africa, is tied for 54th at 152.  Joey Jordan, a senior from Richmond, Virginia, is tied for 64th at 153.
 
Georgia Tech takes the lead into Tuesday's final round with an 11-under 565, one stroke ahead of NC State and three strokes ahead of Georgia. Oklahoma is fourth at 572, Clemson is fifth at 577, host Purdue and Marquette are tied for sixth at 579 and Ohio State is eighth at 580. UNC Greensboro is ninth at 587, Maryland is 10th at 588 and East Carolina and Iowa are tied for 11th at 591, one stroke ahead of the Hokies. Middle Tennessee State is 14th at 592 and Alabama is 15th at 597.

Sunday - First Round

The Virginia Tech men's golf team posted a 7-over 295 and is tied with UNC Greensboro and Middle Tennessee State for tenth place after the first round of the Puerto Rico Classic. The three-day event is being played at the 6,902-yard, par 72 River Course of the Wyndham Rio Mar Country Club in Rio Mar, Puerto Rico.
 
Slade Pickering, a sophomore from North West, South Africa, shot a 1-under 71 and is tied for 14th place individually. He is four strokes behind Stephen Franken of NC State. Pickering, who led the Hokies in scoring in the fall, had six birdies on Sunday.
 
Bradley de Beer, a freshman from Western Cape, South Africa, is tied for 38th at 74 and Connor Burgess, a sophomore from Lynchburg, Virginia and Connor Johnson Jr., a freshman from Richmond, Virginia are tied for 45th at 75. Joey Jordan, a senior from Richmond, Virginia, is tied for 58th at 76.
 
NC State has the team lead at 8-under 280, two strokes ahead of Georgia and three strokes ahead of Georgia Tech. Ohio State is fourth at 285, Oklahoma is fifth at 287, Clemson is sixth at 289 and host Purdue is seventh at 293. Marquette and East Carolina are tied for eighth at 294, one stroke ahead of the Hokies, Spartans and Blue Raiders. Iowa is 13th at 296, Maryland is 14th at 297 and Alabama is 15th at 306.
