Pocratsky wins 800-meter race at Iowa State Classic

The Virginia Tech track and field teams concluded day two of the Iowa State Classic and Clemson Tiger Paw Invitational with multiple personal bests and a first-place finish by Rachel Pocratsky.
 
Pocratsky earned her third event title of the season with her time of 2 minutes, 5.20 seconds in the 800 at the Iowa State Classic. Her time is currently the seventh-fastest in the nation and the fastest in the ACC.
 
Junior Isaiah Rogers has continued to improve throughout his first year with the Hokies and did it once again, as he set a new personal best of 20.61 meters (67 feet, 7 inches) in the weight throw at the Tiger Paw Invitational. This is the third straight week that the Smyrna, Georgia native has set a new personal best in the weight throw. His new PR is the seventh-best mark in school history.
 
Diego Zarate finished fifth and set a new personal best in the mile at the Iowa State Classic with his time of 4:00.44, while Bashir Mosavel-Lo also set a personal best with his time of 4:02.13 to earn a ninth-place finish. With their times, Zarate and Mosavel-Lo moved to sixth and seventh all time in the record book.
 
Junior Matthew Harding ran the eight-fastest 800 in school history with his time of 1:49.78 to place 10th overall in the event.
 
DISTANCE
Shannon Quinn finished 16th in the 800 with a time of 2:09.45, while Catherine Stone placed 29th with her time of 2:11.52.
 
Owen Buck placed 25th in the 800 with his time of 1:52.02, while Eldon Phillips ran 1:52.39 to finish 29th. David Whitfield set a new personal best in the 800 with his time of 1:52.79.
 
UP NEXT
Tech returns to Rector Field House, as it plays host to the Virginia Tech Challenge for the final regular-season meet of the indoor season. The action begins Friday and will run through Saturday.

DAY ONE (Iowa State Classic, Clemson Tiger Paw Invitational)

The Virginia Tech track and field teams wrapped up day one of the of the Clemson Tiger Paw Invitational and the Iowa State Classic with a record-breaking performance from Sara Freix and strong showings across the board from the distance group.
 
Freix shaved 20 seconds off of her previous personal best of 16 minutes, 28.95 seconds in the 5,000 to break the Hokie school record with her time of 16:07.09. That time snapped the previous record held by Sarah Rapp (16:16.13) and is currently the second-fastest time in the ACC.
 
Junior Peter Seufer placed 11th in the seeded 5,000 and set a new personal best with his time of 13:52.32. His new PR is currently the second-fastest time in the ACC.
 
Junior Jack Joyce set a new personal best with his time of 8:09.98, and he ran the 10th-fastest time in school history on the way to a fourth-place finish in the unseeded 3,000.
 
DISTANCE
Sophomore Fitsum Seyoum had a solid performance in his first collegiate 5,000, as he finished with a time of 14:24.04.
 
Junior Sarah Edwards finished 14th in the seeded 3,000 with her time of 9:33.53
 
Junior Kayla Richardson set a new personal best in the 5,000 with her time of 16:43.72.
 
UP NEXT
Both teams return to action Saturday for the final day of the Tiger Paw Invitational and Iowa State Classic. Action at Clemson beings at 9:30 a.m. with the weight throw, while the Hokies at Iowa State get started at 1:25 p.m. with the mile.
