Enid Duut and Cecilia Marenick highlighted the final day of the Vanderbilt Black and Gold Invitational and the Winthrop Invitational for the Virginia Tech track and field teams Saturday afternoon.
To start the day, Marenick placed seventh in the triple jump at the Winthrop Invitational and the mark moved her to seventh all time in the outdoor record book.
At the Black and Gold Invitational, Duut tallied a third-place finish in the discus with her mark of 48.49 meters (159 feet, 1.25 inches). Her mark was good enough to give her the fifth best throw in program history.
Multi-event freshmen John Manilli and Sean Murphy got their first taste of outdoor action this weekend at the Winthrop Invitational. A day after participating in the shot put, the both of them competed in the discus for the first time. Manilli threw a mark of 27.30 meters (89 feet, 7 inches), while Murphy had a toss of 21.94 meters (72 feet, 0 inches).

The Hokies will split up again next weekend, heading to three meets – Florida Relays, Raleigh Relays and Texas Relays.

Emma Thor took first place in the hammer throw and a great outdoor opener by Cole Beck headlined the Virginia Tech track and field teams at the Florida State Relays, Vanderbilt Black and Gold Invitational and Winthrop invitational of Friday.
Thor, a native of Sweden, tossed a mark of 62.73 meters (205 feet, 10 inches) to win her first event title of the outdoor season. Pavla Kuklova finished behind her with a third-place throw of 60.36 meters (198 feet, 0.75 inches), while Kajsa Wennberg came in fifth place with a throw of 57.09 meters (187 feet, 4 inches). Enid Duut placed eighth in the shot put with a throw of 13.47 meters (44 feet, 2.5 inches) in her first appearance as a Hokie.
On the men's side in throws, Tyson Jones turned in a fourth-place finish as he moved to ninth all-time in the shot put with a mark of 16.99 meters (55 feet, 9 inches). Isaiah Rogers set a new outdoor personal-best in the Hammer throw with his toss of 59.20 meters (194 feet, 3 inches).
"Overall this meet was exactly what we set it up, a rust buster to set up the season," Tech throws coach Andrew Dubs said. "Coming out of a really heavy week of training everyone had a good effort today but the heavy training did show a little."
"With that said, training has been going very well and that combined with this meet will set us up very well moving forward. Next week we will head down to one of the best meets in the country, the Florida Relays. Always a great meet for us and this year will be no different."
"I know the athletes have been looking forward to next week to be able to compete against some of the best throwers in the country. We will be ready and I am very much looking forward to all of them competing hard."
The sprints/hurdles group had a strong day in the sunshine state at the Florida State Relays. Freshman Cole Beck placed second in the 100-meter dash and tied Tadashi Pinder's time of 10.36 seconds for the fifth-fastest 100 in school history.
"I was very pleased with Cole [Beck] opening up with an all-time personal best." Tech sprints coach Tim Vaught said. "That was the first time he ever opened up that fast and he looked good doing it."
Freshman Miles Green ran the eighth-fastest 400-meter hurdles time in school history when he crossed the finish line with a time of 52.49 to finish second in the in the event.
"With Miles [Green], he executed everything we talked about through the first five hurdles," Vaught said. "After that, I think it shocked him. That was his fastest opener of the outdoor season and he's excited about next weekend."
Sophomore Kennedy Dennis clocked a time of 11.61 in the 100 with a third-place finish.
"Kennedy [Dennis] ran a strong first half of her race," Vaught said. "She just has to get her outdoor legs under her."
The women's 4x100-meter relay team of Kanajzae Brown, Dennis, Arlicia Bush and Nykah Smith placed third at the Florida State Relays with a time of 45.45 seconds. That same group got back on the track a few hours later as they clocked a time of 3 minutes, 42.45 seconds to finish third in the 4x400-meter relay.
Michael Davenport ran the 400 for the first time during the outdoor season and placed 13th with a time of 49.50.
