AUSTIN, Texas – Virginia Tech wrapped up the 2019 NCAA Women's Swimming & Diving Championships on Saturday, highlighted by a personal best time from junior Reka Gyorgy in the 200 back.
Gyorgy swam a 1:54.42 to cut her previous best time of 1:54.57 in the 200 back. With the mark, Gyorgy finished 29th overall in the event.
"Reka swam her best career time in the 200 backstroke," said head coach Sergio Lopez Miro. "She broke a time that she set in 2017 and she had been struggling a bit with it, so this really helps her gain confidence in the backstroke. She was very happy and I am very happy for her."
In the 100 free, Joelle Vereb turned in a time of 49.04 to place 35th. Senior Ashlynn Peters placed 43rd in platform diving to wrap up a stellar Virginia Tech career.
"I think Joelle did very well," said Miro. "She's been having some trouble with her asthma and breathing this week, but has come out ready to swim each event. Before the season she was 49.68 in the 100 free, so this was a good time for her this season. She was a bit disappointed because she swam faster at ACCs, but I think it was a great finish to her season. As for Ashlynn, I think today and this week was very emotional for her. She was competing in her final events and in her home state."
Tech is poised to finish in the mid-30s overall at NCAAs in team scoring.
"We got some points this week and it is a starting point for us to continue building on the Virginia Tech tradition. I think the team is excited and overall we are looking forward to the future. Reka and Joelle both turned in personal best times this week and any time you can come to NCAAs and swim a best time, it is a very good thing."
The Hokies will be back in the pool next week for the 2019 Men's NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships, hosted by University of Texas.
