Tech and Liberty to face each other again, this time on the diamond

BLACKSBURG - Just two days ago, the Virginia Tech men's basketball team made history by advancing to the NCAA's Sweet 16 for the first time ever (since the field expanded to 64 teams in 1985) as the Hokies defeated Liberty on the hardwood in San Jose, Calif., Sunday night. Today, both schools' baseball teams will battle it out on the diamond at English Field at Union Park. Tech and Liberty, who met earlier this year in Lynchburg will face each other again today with first pitch scheduled for 4 p.m. In that first game, it was Trey McDyre's sixth-inning solo home run that broke a 3-3 tie as the Flames held on for a 4-3 victory on March 5 (click here for that game's recap).

Live links for today's game are below. For those attending, admission is free, but please visit our GAMEDAY CENTRAL PAGE for more information about parking, prohibited items and an A to Z Guide on English Field at Union Park.

Quick notes about the Liberty series

  • Tech enters the game with a 16-8 overall record and is 4-5 in ACC play. Tech is coming off back-to-back losses to North Carolina over the weekend after winning Friday's ACC series opener. The Hokies are 12-3 in non-conference games and have won four straight. Their last loss was that 4-3 decision on March 5 at Liberty.
  • Liberty comes to Blacksburg with a 17-6 overall mark and is 1-2 in ASUN action. The Flames went 2-1 in their league opening series over the weekend against NJIT. Liberty just completed an eight-game homestand with a 6-2 mark, which included wins over Virginia and North Carolina.
  • All-time, Tech holds a 40-27 record against Liberty, and are 23-14 in games played at home - 15-11 in games at English Field at Union Park.
  • Under head coach John Szefc, Tech is now 1-2. Last year, the Hokies lost a 4-3 decision in 10 innings (March 27) in Blacksburg, before taking an 11-5 contest (May 2) at Liberty.
  • The home field advantage has not been a real factor in the series over the last six years, as the teams were each 3-0 on each other's home field until this year's outcome in Lynchburg. Prior to the Flames' victory at home, the last team to win at home was Tech, on March 19, 2013 (a 16-6 victory).
  • Liberty is a 3-4 away from Liberty Baseball Stadium in 2019, while the Hokies are 9-4 at English Field at Union Park, where they are seeking win No. 500 all-time at the facility.
