The 20th-ranked Hokies fall to No. 5 Florida State, 3-2

BLACKSBURG – Playing with just 10 players for the last five minutes of regulation and both overtime sessions, No. 20 Virginia Tech could not hold off No. 5 Florida State the entire second and the Seminoles got the game winner with just 4:11 left on the clock to take the ACC contest on Thursday night at Thompson Field.

Tech (9-3-1, 1-3-1 ACC) was facing its fourth straight top 10 opponent and went toe-to-toe with the Seminoles all game, which included battling back from a goal deficit to force overtime. Florida State (11-2-0, 5-0-0) got the golden goal, though, from Leilanni Nesbeth, her first tally of the season.

Molly Feighan gave the Hokies an early 1-0 lead with a goal in the 10th minute, the second of her career, and Allyson Brown's finish off a Grace Sklopan cross tied the match at 2-2 in the 78th minute. For Brown, it was her first of the season, the fifth of her career, while Sklopan tallied her first collegiate point with the assist.

However, in the 86th minute, Jordan Hemmen was sent off with a red card and the Hokies were down a player and on the defensive the rest of the evening.

McGlynn made 10 saves in the losing effort, including seven in the second period and one in the first overtime.

Quick Notes:

  • This was the 20th meeting between the two schools, and Florida State has yet to concede a loss, holding an 18-0-2 mark.
  • Tech is now 11-55-5 against teams ranked in the top 10.
  • As a ranked team, Tech is 73-29-8 under head coach Chugger Adair, and 11-25-4 versus other ranked opponents.

  • McGlynn is now at 53 straight and Hemmen 51.
  • McGlynn has played 4,712:32 straight minutes since the last time she was substituted (Aug. 25, 2017 – 50 straight matches).
