Hokies finish eighth at Wolfpack Intercollegiate

FINAL RESULTS

SATURDAY

The Virginia Tech men's golf team posted a three-round total of 872 and finished in eighth place at the Wolfpack Intercollegiate on Sunday. The two-day tournament was played at par 72, 7,358-yard Lonnie Poole Golf Course on the campus on NC State University in Raleigh, North Carolina.
 
Tech opened Saturday with a 302 in the morning's first round and followed by a 5-under 283 in the afternoon and entered the final round in 10th place. Tech shot a 1-under 287 on Sunday, fifth-best score of the final round.
 
Connor Burgess, a junior from Lynchburg, Virginia, tied for eighth overall with a 6-under 210 to lead the Hokies. He finished seven strokes behind medalist Jonathan Brightwell on UNC Greensboro. Burgess posted a 75 in Saturday's first round, before firing a 6-under 66 in the afternoon round. He finished up the event with a 3-under 69 on Sunday, including birdies on his final three holes.
 
Mark Lawrence Jr., a redshirt senior from Richmond, Virginia, tied for 37th overall at 220 and Bradley de Beer, a sophomore from Western Cape, South Africa, tied for 47th at 223. Daniel Azallion, a freshman from Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, tied for 59th at 225 and Connor Johnson Jr., a sophomore from Richmond, Virginia, tied for 66th at 226.
 
Host NC State took the team title with a 22-under 842, four strokes ahead of Campbell and 11 strokes ahead of Furman and UNC Greensboro. UNC Wilmington was fifth at 857, Augusta was sixth at 863 and Elon was seventh at 865, seven strokes ahead of the Hokies. Southern Illinois was ninth at 874, Maryland was 10th at 877, High Point was 11th at 878, Georgetown and Jacksonville tied for 12th at 890. George Mason was 14th at 900 and Ohio was 15th at 906.
 
The Hokies return to action this coming weekend, as they travel to the Tri-Cities area for the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate. The three-day event will be played at the Blackthorn Club at the Ridges in Jonesborough, Tennessee Oct. 11-13.

Tech opened the day with a 302 in the morning's first round and followed by a 5-under 283 in the afternoon. 
 
Connor Burgess, a junior from Lynchburg, Virginia, is tied for 10th overall with a 3-under 141. He trails leader Jonathan Brightwell on UNC Greensboro by nine strokes. Burgess opened with a 75, before firing a 6-under 66 in the afternoon round. In the second round, Burgess bogeyed his first hole and then posted seven birdies and no bogeys after that.
 
The trio of Daniel Azallion, a freshman from Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, Bradley de Beer, a sophomore from Western Cape, South Africa and Mark Lawrence Jr., a redshirt senior from Richmond, Virginia, all are tied for 52nd at 150 and Connor Johnson Jr., a sophomore from Richmond, Virginia, is tied for 60th at 151. Lawrence carded a 3-under 69 in the second round.
 
Campbell leads the tournament with an 18-under 558, four strokes ahead of host NC State and six strokes ahead of UNC Greensboro. UNC Wilmington and Augusta are tied for fourth at 573, Furman is sixth at 574 and Elon is seventh at 575. Maryland is eighth at 580 and Southern Illinois is ninth at 582, three strokes ahead of the Hokies. Georgetown is 11th at 591, High Point is 12th at 593, Jacksonville is 13th at 598, George Mason is 14th at 599 and Ohio is 15that 605.
 
The final round will be played Sunday morning. The Hokies will be grouped with Georgetown and High Point and will begin play at 8 a.m. from the 10th tee.
