McGlynn named ACC Defensive Player of the Week

GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Announced today by the Atlantic Coast Conference, Virginia Tech senior goalkeeper Mandy McGlynn has been selected as the ACC Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week after posting her eighth shutout of the season against No. 10 Duke on Sunday.

The honor is the fifth of her Tech career, which is the most ever for a soccer player at the school. McGlynn picked up her first on Oct. 3, 2017 as a sophomore, was twice chosen the defensive player of the week last year (Aug. 21 and Oct. 2) and garners her second this season, as she was also the honoree on Sept. 17. The only other Hokie with multiple selections by the ACC was Murielle Tiernan, who earned the last of her three offensive awards on Sept. 6, 2016.

In the midst of a four-game span against top 10 opponents, the Hokies and McGlynn bounced back from their first two losses of 2019 to record a scoreless draw against the Blue Devils as McGlynn stopped seven shots in a 110-minute effort.

Four of her seven saves came in the second overtime period as Duke posted five of their 15 shots in the final 10 minutes. They also took two of their three corners in the final stanza as well.

It was McGlynn's conference-leading eighth shutout of the year and was the 30th of her career, breaking the school record she shared with Dayle Colpitts (2010-13) entering the match. The seven saves were the second-most this season for her, trailing only the career-high 11 she had in Tech's previous game at Clemson.

This season, McGlynn currently sits in the top five nationally in shutouts, leads the ACC and is in the top 20 nationally in save percentage (.870), and is in the top 25 in goals against average (0.571).

The Hokies are back in action this Thursday when they welcome No. 6 and defending national champion Florida State to Thompson Field for an ACC contest set for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff. Tech will then head down to Raleigh, N.C. for a 5 p.m. game against NC State on Sunday.
