Hokies finish fifth at Battle at the Beach

SUNDAY

The Virginia Tech women's golf team posted a three-round total of 874 and finished in fifth place at the Battle at the Beach on Sunday afternoon. The three-day event was played at the par 72, 6,280-yard Club Campestre San Jose in San Jose del Cabo, Mexico.
 
Tech opened the tournament with a 300 in Friday's first round and was tied for fifth overall. The Hokies posted a 2-under 288 on Saturday, the second-best round of the second round, to be in third place. Tech had an even-par 288 on Sunday.
 
Emily Mahar, a junior from Brisbane, Australia, led the Hokies in Mexico. She finished in seventh place at 3-under 213. Mahar was 10 strokes behind Julia Johnson of Ole Miss, who tied an NCAA record with an 11-under 61 in Sunday's final round. Mahar's 1-under 71 on Sunday featured three birdies.
 
Alyssa Montgomery, a freshman from Knoxville, Tennessee, finished in 11th place for the Hokies at 1-under 215 and Keera Foocharoen, a sophomore from Bangkok, Thailand, tied for 36th at 223. Jessica Spicer, a senior from Bahama, North Carolina, tied for 47th at 225 and Becca DiNunzio, a freshman from Norfolk, Virginia, tied for 59th at 230. Foocharoen joined Mahar with a 1-under 71 in the final round and Montgomery carded an eagle-2 on the par 4, 370-yard No. 10 on Sunday.
 
Ole Miss claimed the team title with a 7-under 857, seven strokes ahead of LSU. Host TCU was third at 869, three strokes ahead of Texas A&M and five strokes ahead of the Hokies. Texas Tech was sixth at 875, San Jose State was seventh at 879, Augusta was eighth at 881, Vanderbilt was ninth at 883 and Denver was 10th at 897. Nebraska was 11th at 902, Missouri was 12th at 904, Indianapolis was 14th at 905, Kansas State was 15th at 916 and UAB was 16th at 935. 
 
This was the final tournament of the fall for the Hokies. Tech returns to action on Feb. 9-11, as they compete in the Lady Puerto Rico Classic, hosted by Purdue at the Rio Mar Country Club in Rio Mar, Puerto Rico.

Emily Mahar, a junior from Brisbane, Australia and Alyssa Montgomery, a freshman from Knoxville, Tennessee lead the Hokies. The duo is tied for fourth place at 2-under 142. They are three strokes behind Chiara Tamburlini of Ole Miss. Montgomery had the Hokies' best round of the day, with a 3-under 69, including a 32 on the back nine. Mahar had an even-par 72 on Saturday.
 
Jessica Spicer, a senior from Bahama, North Carolina, and Keera Foocharoen, a sophomore from Bangkok, Thailand, is tied for 45that 152. Becca DiNunzio, a freshman from Norfolk, Virginia, is tied for 59that 155. Foocharoen and DiNunzio each recorded eagles on Saturday. Foocharoen eagled the par 5, 530-yard No. 4 and DiNunzio eagled the par 5, 476-yard No. 13.
 
Ole Miss takes the lead into Sunday's final round. The Rebels have a two-round total of 4-over 580, one stroke ahead of LSU and six strokes ahead of the Hokies. Host TCU is fourth at 587, Texas Tech is fifth at 594, Augusta is sixth at 595 and San Jose State is seventh at 596. Texas A&M is eighth at 597, Vanderbilt is ninth at 598, Denver is 10that 605 and Nebraska is 11that 606. Missouri is 12that 607, Kansas State is 13that 610, Iowa is 14that 611, Indianapolis is 15that 613 and UAB is 16that 635. 
 
The final round will take place on Sunday. There will be a 7:15 a.m. Pacific Standard Time (9:15 a.m. EST) shotgun start and the Hokies will be grouped with TCU, LSU and Ole Miss.

Emily Mahar, a junior from Brisbane, Australia, leads the Hokies. She carded a 2-under 70 and is tied for second place individually. Mahar is one of three players two strokes behind Ingrid Lindblad of LSU. Mahar registered six birdies in the opening round, including three consecutive birdies on holes 6-8.
 
Alyssa Montgomery, a freshman from Knoxville, Tennessee, is tied for 14that 73 and Jessica Spicer, a senior from Bahama, North Carolina, is tied for 43rdat 77. Keera Foocharoen, a sophomore from Bangkok, Thailand, is tied for 67that 80 and Becca DiNunzio, a freshman from Norfolk, Virginia, is tied for 76that 82.
 
LSU holds the team lead at 293, three strokes ahead of Texas A&M and five strokes ahead of Vanderbilt. Host TCU is fourth at 299, one stroke ahead of the Hokies and Spartans. Denver and Ole Miss are tied for seventh at 302, Missouri, Augusta and Texas Tech are tied for ninth at 303 and Nebraska is 12that 308. Kansas State is 13that 310, Indianapolis is 14that 311, Iowa is 15that 312 and UAB is 16that 318. 
 
The second round will be played Saturday morning and the final round will take place on Sunday.
