Hokie ClubGREENSBORO, N.C. – Announced today by the Atlantic Coast Conference and voted on by the league's 14 head coaches, the 2019 Women's Soccer ACC All-Conference teams feature 41 of the league's student-athletes and includes two Virginia Tech Hokies – goalkeeper Mandy McGlynn, a First Team honoree, and defender Kelsey Irwin, a Third Team choice.
With their 2019 selections, both Hokies repeat their honors from a year ago, as each was named to their respective team after the 2018 season. To see the full 2019 All-ACC teams and release, CLICK HERE.
McGlynn, who was named a 2018 and 2019 preseason All-ACC and was voted the 2018 ACC All-Conference First Team goalkeeper, enjoyed an even more successful season than her junior campaign. She started all 18 matches during the regular season and has played every single minute (1,658:37) which has continued her consecutive minutes played streak to 5,165:20 (55 straight matches).
The senior from Jacksonville, Florida, has stopped 73 shots for an 83.9 save percentage, which is currently the second-best mark ever in a single season at the school (Karen Crawley, 86.8, 1997). Meanwhile, her 0.76 goals allowed average is also currently second-best (Caroline Kelly, 0.69, 2014), her 10 shutouts are tied for second (Dayle Colpitts, 11, 2013) and her 12 wins are third all-time.
McGlynn's career numbers place her in the top three for a career goalkeeper at the school, which includes a school record 32 shutouts. Currently, her 0.99 GAA is the best mark ever, her 41 wins, 6,924 minutes played and 79.5 save percentage is second and her 294 saves are third.
Last year, McGlynn became just the fourth Tech player to ever be named All-ACC First Team – and the first goalkeeper – and joined Jazmine Reeves (2013), Ashley Meier (2015) and Murielle Tiernan. With her repeat selection, she joins Tiernan as the only two Hokies to earn multiple First Team selections as Tiernan was a three-time honoree from 2014-16.
Irwin was again tabbed a Third Team defender by the league, as she earned her first ever postseason accolade with last year's choice. She became just the second defender for the Hokies to make an All-ACC team and now joins Jordan Coburn as a repeat selection, as Coburn was a three-time All-ACC Third Team defender (2013-15).
The graduate student from San Diego, California, led the defense in front of McGlynn and limited opponents to 192 shots on the year. A season after playing all 2,057 minutes – Tech's only field player to log every minute of the year – she was one of six field players in 2019 to see more than 1,000 minutes (1,272) despite missing four matches due to injury. Her 90.1 minutes played per game is the second-most among Tech field players this season.
She also posted a career high eight points on the offensive end, scoring three times and adding two assists, fifth-most on the team. Versus Boston College (Oct. 24), she notched her second career multi-goal game, and her second career game winner, with a pair of goals off free kicks in a 2-1 victory. Irwin became the third Hokie with a brace this season.
Tech finished the regular season 12-4-2 overall and 4-4-2 in the ACC, tied for the eighth spot in the league standings but did not advance to the ACC Championship tournament due to tiebreaker criteria. The Hokies await their NCAA postseason fate, which they'll find out during the NCAA selection show held on Monday, Nov. 11 at 4:30 p.m.
