Hokies head to New York for busy weekend

BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech wrestling travels to the Empire State this weekend for their first back-to-back duals of the season against Binghamton Saturday and No. 19 Cornell on Sunday.
 
Saturday's dual with Binghamton is scheduled for 3 p.m. and can be live streamed on FloWrestling. Tech and Cornell will square off at 1 p.m. Sunday, which can be seen on ESPN+.
 
The No. 3 Hokies are coming off a 36-3 win over West Virginia last week in Cassell Coliseum. Tech won nine of the 10 matches to win their sixth dual of the season. Virginia Tech is one of three division one programs who remain undefeated.

Tech takes on Binghamton

  • Head coach Tony Robie and the No. 3 Hokies head to Binghamton on Saturday for their seventh dual of the season. Robie began his head coaching career at Binghamton in 2005.
  • The Hokies are 2-1 against Binghamton all-time. The teams' last meeting was in 2013 when Tech won 32-9.
  • The matchup of the day will be at 184 pounds. No. 2 Hunter Bolen who is undefeated in duals this year will faceoff against No. 6 Lou DePrez. The two met at the Cliff Keen Invitational this season where Bolen won an 8-3 decision.
  • This is the first road dual against an unranked opponent this season for the Hokies.

 
Hokies face fifth ranked opponent in Cornell

  • After Binghamton, Tech will travel to Ithaca to compete against No. 19 Cornell.
  • Cornell is the Hokies fifth ranked opponent of the season. Tech is 4-0 in the previous matchups.
  • Virginia Tech is still searching for their first win against the Big Red. The Hokies are 0-4 all-time.
  • Two ranked wrestlers are scheduled to compete against the Hokies. At 133 pounds, No. 4 Chas Tucker will face off with Collin Gerardi. No. 2 Hunter Bolen will see another ranked opponent this weekend at 184 pounds with No. 19 Jonathan Loew.

 
Hokies in the Rankings

  • Virginia Tech was ranked third in the country this week by the NWCA Coaches Poll. This matches Tech's highest ever ranking from 2016.
  • Nine Hokies appeared in at least one of the three individual ranking systems this week, including true freshman Bryce Andonian.
  • David McFadden moved up to No. 3 at 165 pounds in both the InterMat and FloWrestling poll.
  • Hunter Bolen, ranked second in all three polls, was listed as the fourth-best pound-for-pound wrestler in the country by Quant Wrestling.

 
100 wins for McFadden

  • Redshirt senior David McFadden reached a career milestone in the Hokies dual vs. West Virginia with his 100th career win.
  • McFadden won a 16-7 major decision to reach the 100-win plateau.
  • He joins a list of 12 other Hokies to hit 100 wins, including current Tech director of performance Ty Walz.
  • McFadden is 13th on the Virginia Tech all-time wins list.

 
Hokies roll through West Virginia

  • Virginia Tech kept their undefeated record alive after a 36-3 domination of West Virginia in Cassell Coliseum.
  • Nine of the 10 Hokies won their match against the Mountaineers, and four were able to pick up bonus points.
  • Mitch Moore and Bryce Andonian recorded pins, Hunter Bolen had a tech fall and David McFadden won by major decision.
  • Virginia Tech is one of three division one programs who remain undefeated in the 2019-20 season.
