(DAY ONE)
BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech track and field teams started off the 2020 indoor season with a bang for the second consecutive season, as the Hokies saw two records fall on Friday evening at Rector Field House.
One year after breaking the U20 indoor record in the 300-meter dash (32.49), Jacory Patterson once again etched his name into the history books, as he broke the collegiate record in the same event with his time of 32.28 seconds.
Patterson broke the record previously held by former Georgia runner Torrin Lawrence (32.32), who set the mark at Rector Field House in 2010. With his time, Patterson now holds the No. 1 time in the country, the sixth-fastest time by an American, and the 11th-fastest time ever in the event.
"Last year, I found out the collegiate record was 32.32, and of course, that was my goal this year," Patterson said. "I don't like putting limits on myself. I just told myself to go out there and run."
"Jacory is one that has big goals for himself," Tech sprints coach Tim Vaught said. "Ever since I recruited this guy, he's said that he wanted to break records and be a national champion. At practice, he's one of those athletes that every coach wants. He's always asking what he needs to do and wants to do more than somebody else to get better. For him to break this NCAA record formerly held by Torrin Lawrence of Georgia, it's amazing. It just speaks volumes about the amount of work he puts in."
After an injury plagued sophomore season, Caitlan Tate returned to full form, as she shattered her previous personal-best time of 38.62 to break Tech's 300 indoor school record previously held by Kennedy Dennis (37.88). Tate ran the 300 in a time of 37.15.
"Caitlan came back this year as a different athlete," Vaught said. "She's been working very hard and she told me early that she wants to break records, make nationals and impact this program. We've seen it at practice, but for her to go out here and actually do it, is very, very impressive."
