Hokies finish third in Puerto Rico

TUESDAY - Third Round

The Virginia Tech women's golf team posted a three-round total of 871 and finished in third place at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic on Tuesday afternoon. The three-day, 54-hole event was played at the 6,164-yard, par 72 River Course at the Rio Mar Country Club in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico.
 
The Hokies shot an opening round even-par 288 in Sunday's first round and followed that with a 295 on Monday. Tech completed competition with another even-par 288, the third-best round in Tuesday's final round.
 
Alyssa Montgomery, a freshman from Knoxville, Tennessee, tied for third individually with a 6-under 210, three strokes behind medalist Irene Kim of Northwestern. The third-place finish is the best of Montgomery's young collegiate career and she now has four top 20 finishes in her five career events. She had five birdies on Tuesday in her 2-under 70 round and 15 for the tournament (five in each of the three rounds).
 
Emily Mahar, a junior from Brisbane, Australia tied for 12th overall with a 218 and Keera Foocharoen, a sophomore from Bangkok, Thailand, tied for 16th at 219. Jessica Spicer, a senior from Bahama, North Carolina, tied for 37th at 224 and Becca DiNunzio, a freshman from Norfolk, Virginia, tied for 73rd at 239. Mahar (71) and Foocharoen (72) joined Montgomery for par-or-better rounds on Tuesday.
 
Northwestern had an 8-under 280 on Tuesday and took the team title at even-par 864, six strokes ahead of Texas Tech and seven strokes ahead of the Hokies. Oklahoma State was fourth at 873, Kentucky was fifth at 875, host Purdue was sixth at 877, Augusta was seventh at 881, Georgia was eighth at 883 and NC State was ninth at 884. East Carolina finished 10th at 888, Iowa State was 11th at 905, Indiana and TCU tied for 12th at 907 and Maryland and Nebraska tied for 14th at 914.
 
The Hokies return to action on Feb. 24-25, as they travel to suburban Houston to compete in the Icon Invitational. The two-day event, hosted by the University of Houston, will be played at The Woodlands Country Club in The Woodlands, Texas.

MONDAY - Second Round

The three-day, 54-hole event is being played at the 6,164-yard, par 72 River Course at the Rio Mar Country Club in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico. The Hokies shot an opening round even-par 288 in Sunday's first round and followed that with a 295 on Monday.
 
Alyssa Montgomery, a freshman from Knoxville, Tennessee, shot a 4-under 68 on Monday and is currently tied for the tournament lead with Irene Kim of Northwestern at 4-under 140. Montgomery had five birdies and just one bogey in Monday's round.
 
Emily Mahar, a junior from Brisbane, Australia and Keera Foocharoen, a sophomore from Bangkok, Thailand are tied for 21st at 147. Jessica Spicer, a senior from Bahama, North Carolina, is tied for 34th at 149 and Becca DiNunzio, a freshman from Norfolk, Virginia, is in 69th place at 159.
 
Texas Tech posted the only sub-par round on Monday and holds the team lead at 3-over 579, two strokes ahead of Oklahoma State and four strokes ahead of the Hokies. Host Purdue and Northwestern are tied for fourth at 584, Kentucky is sixth at 586, Georgia is seventh at 587, NC State is eighth at 592 and East Carolina is ninth at 598. Augusta is 10th at 599, TCU is 11th at 601, Iowa State and Nebraska are tied for 12th at 607, Maryland is 14th at 610 and Indiana is 15th at 611.
 
The final round will be played Tuesday morning with a 6:30 a.m. ET shotgun start. The Hokies will be grouped again with Oklahoma State and Texas Tech on Tuesday and the teams will begin play on holes 1-3.


SUNDAY - First Round

Becca DiNunzio, a freshman from Norfolk, Virginia is tied for 43rdat 76.
 
Oklahoma State holds the team lead with a 3-under 285, three strokes ahead of the Hokies and Boilermakers. Kentucky is fourth at 291, Northwestern and Georgia are tied for fifth at 292, Texas Tech is seventh at 296, Augusta is eighth at 299 and NC State is ninth at 301. Iowa State is 10that 304, Nebraska is 11that 305, East Carolina is 12that 306, TCU and Maryland are tied for 13that 309 and Indiana is 15that 311.
 
The second round will be played Monday morning with a 7 a.m. shotgun start. The Hokies will be grouped again with Oklahoma State and Purdue, the same teams Tech was grouped with in Sunday's opening round.
