No. 17/21 Hokies beat Patriots after big first inning

FAIRFAX, Va. – Behind a first inning that saw it put up 10 runs off nine hits, Virginia Tech softball defeated George Mason 12-1 in five innings Wednesday afternoon to sweep its midweek road trip.
 
The Hokies (21-4) defeated the Patriots (7-12) after beating George Washington (8-14) Tuesday afternoon in Washington D.C. Tech has now won eight straight games dating back to March 1.
 
Kelsey Bennett, coming into the game already with the lead in RBIs, hit two home runs Wednesday to tie Grace Chavez for the team-lead of seven. The sophomore crushed both of her solo homers over the right-field wall.
 
Kaylee Hewitt (6-1) got the win for the Hokies after throwing four innings and allowing just one hit and no earned runs. Jayme Bailey and Meredith Slaw had three RBIs, while Olivia Lattin, Maddi Banks, Kelsey Brown and Chavez each had one.
 
THE GAME
 
The Hokies wasted no time getting on the board Wednesday, scoring 10 runs in the first inning. Bailey had three RBIs in the inning, hitting an RBI single and triple. Meredith Slaw hit a three-run blast just five at-bats into the game. Lattin had an RBI double, followed by RBI singles from Banks and Brown and a sacrifice fly from Chavez.
 
Bennett hit her first home run in the second inning and her second in the fourth to extend Tech's lead to 12-0. George Mason hit an RBI single in the bottom of the fourth.
 
Molly Jacobson entered the game in the fifth inning and retired the side and allowed just one hit.
 
NOTES
 

  • Bennett hit two home runs in a game for the second time in her career, the first was Feb. 23, 2019 against [RV] Texas State. She now has seven homers on the season and 21 in her career.

 

  • Bailey had three RBIs Wednesday, tying her career high. She has now hit a triple in three straight games.

 

  • Slaw also had three RBIs against George Mason and her second homer in three games. She is up to seven home runs on her career.
