Regular-season finale at Notre Dame awaits Hokies

Game Notes

BLACKSBURG – In its last regular-season game of 2019-20, the Virginia Tech men's basketball team will play at Notre Dame on Saturday at 2 p.m. ET.

The Hokies (16-14, 7-12 ACC) haven't faced the Fighting Irish (18-12, 9-10) yet this season, but did sweep them last year.

The last time these two faced off, the Hokies won 67-59 in South Bend last February behind them winning the glass. Tech is 2-3 all-time at Notre Dame.

Notre Dame leads the all-time series 8-4, but Tech has won three of the last of four games, with the lone loss being in the 2018 ACC Tournament in Brooklyn, New York.

Tech coach Mike Young and Notre Dame coach Mike Brey have faced each other once, with that matchup coming in 2005, a 74-71 victory for the Irish over Wofford.

The matchup will be broadcast on ACC Network, with Dave O'Brien (play-by-play) and Jordan Cornette (analyst) and Katie George (reporter) on the call, while Jon Laaser (play-by-play) and Mike Burnop (analyst) will broadcast on Virginia Tech Sports Properties.

The last time out, Tech snapped its four-game losing streak with a 12-point victory over Clemson at home on senior day at Cassell Coliseum, 70-58. The Hokies hit 12 3-pointers and shot 54 percent from the field, while holding the Tigers to a 35.1 clip from the floor.

Though it hasn't necessarily equated to wins, the bench for Tech has been steady as of late, outscoring its opponents' reserves in its last six games, averaging 29.5 points a game.

SCOUTING NOTRE DAME

•  The Irish are coming off a heartbreaking two-point loss at home to No. 7/8 Florida State (25-5, 15-4) this past Wednesday, falling 73-71 despite holding a 13-point lead in the second half with 10 minutes remaining. Notre Dame's Prentiss Hubb dropped 24 points and dished out six assists.

•  Head coach Mike Brey enters his 20th season in South Bend, following a five-year stint at Delaware where he won America East Co-Coach of the Year honors. Since his arrival to Notre Dame, Brey has racked up the most wins by a coach in school history and has led the Irish to 12 NCAA Tournament berths.

•  Notre Dame is paced by John Mooney, who is likely an All-ACC pick with averaging a double-double (16.8 PTS, 12.8 REB), and Hubbs, who own 12.2 points and 4.9 assists per game.

•  Ranking No. 1 in the country in personal fouls committed per game (12.5) and second in turnovers per game (9.7), the Irish are quite similar to the Hokies, who rank 16th (fouls) and fifth (TOs) in those respective categories.
