Seventh straight ranked opponent awaits Tech in Durham

BLACKSBURG - The Virginia Tech women's soccer team heads out on the road, leaving Thursday afternoon, and heading to Durham, North Carolina to take on its seventh straight ranked opponent to start the season. The seventh-ranked Duke Blue Devils welcome the Hokies to Koskinen Stadium for a 7 p.m. non-conference match on Friday night, which can be viewed on ACC Network Extra.

Last year, goalkeeper Mandy McGlynn saved seven shots and posted the 30th shutout of her Tech career breaking the school record while helping the 23rd-ranked Hokies earn a 0-0 draw against No. 10 Duke at Thompson Field. She broke the career mark which she had shared at 29 with Dayle Colpitts (2010-13) entering the match. The shots were pretty even at 14-12 in favor of the Blue Devils, who also held a 3-1 corner advantage.

Fan information: As previously announced by its athletics department, Duke began the fall sports seasons with no fans in attendance at Koskinen Stadium, which is still the department's policy for this Friday's match with Tech.

The Gauntlet to start 2020
- The Hokies face another ranked foe this week and, back ranking the teams Tech played before the first national poll was announced, it marks seven straight for the Hokies to start the year.
- Not only have all the opponents been ranked, but it's also who the Hokies have faced to start the 2020 season. Since a 2-0 loss at No. 17 Duke on Oct. 2, 2018, Tech is 17-1-2 in matches against teams not named Clemson, Florida State, North Carolina or Virginia.
- In that span, the Hokies are now 0-13 versus the Tigers (0-3), Seminoles (0-2), Tar Heels (0-5) and Cavaliers (0-3), including four of five losses in 2019 - the fifth was in the NCAA tournament against No. 24 Xavier - and all five losses this year.

Facing ranked foes, including six straight
- All-time, Tech is 31-95-14 (140 games - 27.1 win percentage) against ranked opponents.
- Under head coach Chugger Adair (10th season), the Hokies are 18-48-8 (29.7), while they were 13-47-6 (24.2) prior.
- Just once in program history, prior to this season, had Tech faced six straight ranked teams, from Sept. 23 to Oct. 17, 2010 - and the Hokies posted a 2-3-1 record. This marks the first time ever Tech has faced seven straight ranked foes.

More on the Hokies versus ranked teams
- Tech's 1-0 win over No. 6 Virginia on Sept. 27, 2018 marks the team's last win over a top 10 foe.
- In 2018, the Hokies were 2-6-1 versus ranked teams, last beating No. 17 Texas (1-0) on the road in the first round of the NCAA Championship, while they were 0-5-1 in 2019.
- The Hokies were 0-11-1 between the Texas win and Sunday's 2-0 home win over 14th-ranked Pitt. The tie was versus No. 10 Duke on Oct. 6, 2019.
- In its history, Tech is 11-58-5 against programs ranked in the top 10 and 5-36-3 versus the top 5.
- The Hokies last 12 losses, and 15-of-16, have been to ranked teams.
- Tech's last win on the road over a top 10 team was Oct. 24, 2012, at No. 7 Wake Forest (3-0).
