GREENSBORO, N.C. – Following one of the better rookie campaigns by a Hokie in recent memory, Virginia Tech wrestling's Sam Latona was named ACC Freshman of the Year, as announced by the league office on Wednesday.
Latona becomes the ninth Hokie to be named ACC Freshman of the Year and gives Tech the honor in three of the last four seasons. Since the award was created in 2005, Tech leads the ACC with winning it the most and the next-best team would be NC State with four.
The Alabama native placed sixth in the 125-pound weight class at the NCAA Championships to earn All-America honors in his first season competing attached for the Hokies. He finished the season with a 14-3 mark and won the ACC Championship at 125.
Latona, one of 43 Virginia Tech All-Americans all-time and one of three this season, posted an 8-0 mark in dual matches.
