BLACKSBURG, Va. --Freshman TJ Rumfield and freshman Gavin Cross each collected two extra base hits, but the No. 17 Virginia Tech Hokies fell to the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets 15-11 on Friday.
Senior Jaison Heard (3-1) took the loss on the mound for Virginia Tech (19-11, 14-8). Sophomore Jonah Hurney was a bright spot out of the bullpen, going one shutout inning without allowing a hit.
Cross' two extra base hits were the highlight of a 3-for-5 day, and included two doubles, a walk and an RBI. Rumfield made his contribution with two doubles, a walk and two RBIs, part of a 2-for-5 performance at the plate. Freshman Tanner Schobel also chipped in for the Hokies, putting together two hits in four trips to the plate while adding a home run, a walk and two RBIs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Trailing 1-0, the Hokies first put runs on the board in the third inning. Virginia Tech plated two runs off of Georgia Tech pitching, one of which was driven in on a run-scoring double off the bat of Cross.
After the Yellow Jackets rallied to tie the ballgame at two, the Hokies came back to retake the lead in the fifth inning. The Virginia Tech offense exploded for four runs, highlighted by a two-run home run off the bat of Schobel, which brought the Hokies lead to 6-2.
Virginia Tech's lead had disappeared once the seventh inning arrived and turned into an 11-6 Georgia Tech advantage, when the Hokies cut that deficit to 11-7. The Hokies scored once on an RBI single off the bat of freshman Cade Swisher.
The Yellow Jackets expanded their lead to 15-7 before the Virginia Tech offense got back in action, cutting into that lead in the ninth. The Hokies scored four runs in the inning, highlighted by a one-run double off the bat of Rumfield, tightening the Georgia Tech lead to 15-11. The Hokies were unable to get any closer, as neither team scored again in the ballgame.
