BLACKSBURG — The 15th-ranked Virginia Tech women's golf team will switch gears for the week and take part in the inaugural Cavalier Match Play hosted by Virginia at Birdwood Golf Course in Charlottesville, Va.
Eight teams and select individuals from other schools will descend on the par 71, 6,114-yard layout Tuesday, April 6 through Wednesday, April 7. The tournament will feature a match-play format, which is used during the latter stages of postseason tournaments to determine a champion. With the ACC Women's Golf Championship nearly a week away, many teams competing this week will be able to get in that championship mindset.
Matches have been determined based on Golfstat national rankings. No. 2 Duke has earned the top seed in the tournament and will play eight-seed Richmond in Tuesday morning's quarterfinals. The host Cavaliers are slotted in second based on their No. 12 national ranking and will battle NC State.
Tech will compete as the three seed and is set to face six-seed North Carolina. Four-seed Maryland and five-seed Louisville will square off in the final quarterfinal match.
The Hokies' opening match is set to get underway at 9:45 a.m. off hole No. 1. They will go with the lineup of Emily Mahar, Becca DiNunzio, Keerattriya Foocharoen, Jessica Spicer and Alyssa Montgomery.
Semifinal and consolation matches are slated for 12:15 p.m. to 2:47 p.m., Tuesday afternoon. The final matches of the tournament are scheduled for Wednesday at 7:45 a.m. to 10:17 a.m.
