Tech heads to Dayton for Sunday afternoon matchup

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech men's basketball team looks to piece together back-to-back wins on Sunday as it faces Dayton at 2 p.m. inside UD Arena in Dayton, Ohio.

The Hokies are coming off an impressive offensive outing against Cornell on Wednesday, in which they set season highs in scoring (93), three-point field goals made (12), three-point field goal percentage (.522), offensive rebounds (12) and blocked shots (6). Keve Aluma led the way in scoring for Tech for the third-consecutive game, putting up 16 points.

Virginia Tech wrapped up its home non-conference slate undefeated (5-0), as only two tests away from Cassell Coliseum – Dayton and St. Bonaventure – stand between the Hokies and all ACC action.

THE SERIES

  • Virginia Tech and Dayton are set to meet for the 15th time Sunday afternoon in Ohio. The Hokies hold an 8-6 advantage in the all-time series.
  • This will be the second time in three seasons the two sides have faced each other. Dayton, led by All-American Obi Toppin, defeated Tech 89-62 in the semifinals of the Maui Jim Maui Invitational on Nov. 26, 2019.
  • Sunday's game at Dayton will be the eighth time the Hokies make the trek to UD Arena to face the Flyers. Tech is 3-4 at UD Arena. 

A WIN WOULD...

  • Put the Hokies at 3-0 on the road this season.
  • Improve Tech to 9-6 in the all-time series and level its road record in the series at four games apiece.
  • Move the Flyers to 3-4 at home this season.
  • Give Coach Young his first win over Dayton (0-3 entering Sunday). The first two losses were on the road at Dayton while the head coach at Wofford. 

MUTTS NAMED CANDIDATE FOR SENIOR CLASS AWARD

  • Virginia Tech's Justyn Mutts has been selected as a candidate for the 2021-22 Senior CLASS Award.
  • An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Senior CLASS Award recognizes seniors that have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition.
  • Mutts was named one of 30 NCAA Division I men's basketball student-athletes in contention for the award.
  • From the list of 30 candidates, a committee will select 10 finalists for the Senior CLASS Award in February. Those 10 names will then be placed on the official ballot for a nationwide vote. Fan balloting will be coupled with votes from coaches and media to determine the recipient of the award. 

SEVENTH HEAVEN

  • Seven Hokies reached double figures in the scoring column against Cornell on Dec. 8. This is the first time that's occurred since Dec. 17, 2016 vs. The Citadel. 

COMING OFF CAREER DAYS

  • Darius Maddox and Sean Pedulla dialed up career highs in the scoring column against Cornell, contributing 14 and 11, respectively.
  • David N'Guessan racked up a career-high nine boards.

  • Virginia Tech will meet another Atlantic 10 foe – St. Bonaventure – in Charlotte, N.C. on Friday, Dec. 17, at 4 p.m. as part of the Hall of Fame Shootout.
