Tech Takeaways: A look back at the Hokies' 85-72 win over Florida State

BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech put together one of the best shooting performances in program history on Saturday afternoon as the Hokies defeated Florida State, 85-72.

Hunter Cattoor (27, 9-11) and Sean Pedulla (20, 6-7) both set career highs in points and 3-point field goals made. Cattoor's nine buckets from deep tied Justin Robinson's single-game record for 3-pointers made set on Jan. 26, 2019 vs. Syracuse.

STEP(BACK) BROS

  • With their career days, Cattoor and Pedulla accounted for 55 percent of Tech's scoring on Saturday. The two made 15 of the Hokies' 18 3-pointers.
  • Per SportsReference, it was the first time two players have combined to shoot above 80% (83%) from beyond the arc (min. of 18 attempts).
  • Pedulla set a career high in minutes (23), while he and Cattoor also set career highs in points and 3-point field goals made.
  • Pedulla became the first Tech freshman to score 20 points since Feb. 19, 2020.

 RECORD DAY

  • Cattoor tied for the seventh-most 3-point field goals made in a single game in Division I this season and the most among ACC players.
  • The Hokies broke the ACC record for single-game 3-point percentage since moving the three-point line back to 22'1-3/4".
  • Eighteen is the most threes by Tech in an ACC game and 72 percent is the Hokies' highest 3-point percentage in an ACC game.
  • Pedulla had career highs in points (20), minutes (23) and 3-point field goals (six).

HAD TO GET HOT

  • A combination of Florida State's size and Tech's bigs getting in foul trouble made shooting lights out a necessity.
  • The Hokies were outscored 42-20 in the paint, but had a 54-15 point advantage from deep.
  • Virginia Tech had a season-low 18 rebounds, which resulted in their third win (Maine and Maryland) of the season when having a negative rebounding margin.

ABOUT TIME

  • Saturday's win was Tech's first win in Tallahassee, Florida since Feb. 24, 1990, and Mike Young's first win against the Seminoles in his career.
  • It also marked the first time since the 1979-80 season that both Virginia Tech's men's and women's basketball teams won in Tallahassee in the same season.
