BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech men's golf team is set to open its spring slate Sunday-Tuesday at the Watersound Invitational. This three-day tournament will be hosted by Florida State and will be held at Shark's Tooth Golf Club in Panama City Beach, Florida from Feb. 20-22.
Virginia Tech comes into the spring having finished in the top-10 in every tournament it competed in for the fall. They ended their season with a third-place finish after Junior Daniel Azallion recorded his third top five of his career and first of the season at the Wolfpack Intercollegiate.
Tech was led by senior Connor Burgess in the fall as he posted two top-ten finishes and three top-20 finishes. In four events, Burgess shot his lowest round of 64, which tied a school record, and compiled a 70.25 scoring average. His two top-10 finishes were at the Rod Myers Invitational, where he finished eighth, and the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate, where he finished ninth.
Another key contributor for the Hokies last fall was junior Daniel Azallion. He delivered one top-five finish and two top-20 finishes. Azallion shot his lowest round of 66 at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate. His average on the season is 70.75. His top-five finish was at the Wolfpack Intercollegiate where he finished fourth.
The Watersound Invitational will feature 14 teams, including No. 4 North Carolina, No. 6 Arkansas, No. 12 Wake Forest, No. 15 Notre Dame and No. 17 Georgia Tech.
The Hokies will travel Connor Burgess, Connor Johnson Jr., David Stanford, Drew Brockwell and Daniel Azallion to their first event of the spring.
