CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The No. 7 ranked Virginia Tech (9-3, 4-1 ACC) wrestling defeated in-state foe, University of Virginia 20-15 to wrap up conference competition on Friday night. The Hokies finish ACC competition 4-1 with one dual looming on their schedule before the post-season.
Powered by bonus point victories by No. 3 Mekhi Lewis and No. 14 Hunter Bolen, the Hokies also had wins from No. 20 Sam Latona, No. 5 Korbin Myers, and No. 5 Bryce Andonian to push the win streak against the Cavaliers to ten-straight.
UP NEXT
The Hokies travel to Raleigh to face No. 4 NC State on Sunday at 6 p.m. on the ACC Network. While it is a rescheduled bout between the two programs, this will be a non-conference dual according to ACC rules.
MATCH NOTES
- 125 – No. 20 Sam Latona continues his second half surge, picking up a dominant 8-4 victory over Patrick McCormick. Latona picked up three takedowns, an escape, and secured the riding time point to improve his record to 10-6 entering Sunday.
- 133 – No. 5 Korbin Myers was dominant once again against another ranked opponent in No. 23 Brian Courtney. Myers scored three takedowns and was on the attack all bout. He managed to secured an escape and riding time to pick up another ranked victory in his final season.
- 141 – It was scramble city at 141 as No. 22 Collin Gerardi came out on top with a 6-2 victory over Dylan Cedeno. Gerardi scrambed his way to two takedowns in a controlling match. Gerardi improves his record to 10-6 on the season with Friday night's victory.
- 149 – No. 5 Bryce Andonian turned in a gritty performance, emerging victorious against No. 29 Jarod Verkleeren. Andonian had to surge from behind late but managed to pull out the 5-4 victory with short time in the match. Andonian picked up an escape and takedown in the closing moments and added riding time point to snag his sixth ranked victory on the season.
- 174 – It was a scoring clinic as No. 3 Mekhi Lewis stopped the bleeding as Tech dropped back-to-back matches at 157 and 165. Lewis put up seven takedowns en route to a 17-6 major decision over Justin Phillips to pick up the Hokies first bonus point victory of the dual. Lewis remains undefeated at 17-0 entering Sunday evening.
- 184 – No. 14 Hunter Bolen got back to form as he lassoed in a major decision victory over No. 22 Michael Battista, 13-3. Bolen opened the match up late as he hit a Winn-Dixie for six points to secure the major decision victory.
