LAS VEGAS – Virginia Tech football's Amaré Barno was selected in the sixth round at No. 189 overall by the Carolina Panthers in the 2022 NFL Draft on Saturday, marking the second Hokie off the board.
Barno, who moved from linebacker to defensive line after his freshman year at Tech, is the first Tech player taken by the Panthers since 2006, when Carolina took linebacker James Anderson in the third round. Barno is the first Tech defensive lineman picked since Tim Settle in 2018 (Washington, fifth round).
The South Carolina native racked up 78 tackles, 21.5 tackles for loss and 10 sacks in his career with the Hokies and was an All-ACC selection in 2020. He also was a 2022 Reese's Senior Bowl participant and was invited to the NFL Combine in Indianapolis last month, showcasing his skill set to NFL scouts at both events.
