The Hokies' youthful group will look to build on the foundation laid down in 2022 as it approaches a new year of competition. Ryan Fishback and Jordan Chrysostom are fresh off of their NCAA Championships appearance in doubles, with Fishback becoming Virginia Tech's first NCAA Elite 90 Award winner in Men's Tennis. Tech will look to continue its history of NCAA Tournament berths another season, after having made the postseason in 12 of the last 15 years.
Furthermore, the success of current players and alumni on the professional stage is evidence that the Hokies are trending in the right direction. Contributions to the program will help translate results from the summer to ACC competition this season and beyond.
BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech men's tennis has been well represented this summer across the globe as current players and alumni are finding success in professional events.
Current student-athletes Ryan Fishback and Jordan Chrysostom, along with alumni Abe Asabe and Mitch Harper, have reached finals in events ranging from New York to California.
On Friday, July 15, Fishback will compete in the singles final of the Mid-Atlantic Clay Court Championships at Salisbury Country Club (Midlothian, Va.) at 5:30 p.m. Regardless of the result, Fishback will be able to play in another final with Chrysostom in the doubles main draw. at 9 p.m.
Fishback is eyeing his first title of the summer after reaching the final of a PTT event in Atlanta, Ga. on July 3.
Chrysostom reached a semifinal in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. in June before competing with Fishback in this weekend's tournament.
Asaba and Mitchell teamed up at the M15 Rancho Santa Fe and reached a final, which they lost in a narrow third-set tiebreaker, 1-0 (21-19). Apart from Harper, Asaba has reached a pair of doubles finals in Wichita, Kan. and Fountain Valley, Calif.
The first championship of the summer was claimed by Frank Thompson on the ITA Summer Circuit in Georgia last month. Despite not having taken the court in dual matches for the Hokies, Thompson paired up with Fishback at the Tennessee Valley Open Championship to reach the semifinals, as well.
Scott Sculley has been in action, as well, progressing to the quarterfinals in doubles at the Tennessee Valley Open Championship.
