Virginia Tech men's soccer releases 2022 fall schedule

Schedule

BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech men's soccer head coach Mike Brizendine announced the squad's 2022 fall schedule on Friday. The 16-match schedule consists of nine teams that competed in last season's NCAA tournament, including College Cup semifinalists Notre Dame.

"Our players and staff are eager to take on the challenge that this season's schedule provides," Brizendine stated. "We'll be tested early and often, but it will have us prepared for the ultimate goal of putting together a seventh-consecutive NCAA Tournament run. The support from our fans last season was incredible and we look forward to seeing Hokie Nation pack Thompson Field soon."

The season starts with a west coast swing, as the Hokies will take on Grand Canyon on Aug. 25 before traveling to UCLA for an Aug. 28 matchup.

On the following weekend, Tech will take Thompson Field for the first of eight home fixtures in the fall. Virginia Tech will welcome Radford on Sept. 2 as part of the Virginia Tech Tournament before facing Mercer on Sept. 5. Both Radford and Mercer will take on NC State the same weekend as part of the tournament.

The Hokies dive into ACC play on Sept. 9 in Charlottesville, Va. against in-state foe Virginia, then host Wake Forest on Sept. 16.

Between Sept. 20 and Sept. 30, Tech will play in four matches, including home contests with Longwood and Syracuse, and road games against NC State and Davidson.

All but one of Virginia Tech's six October matches are against 2021 NCAA Tournament teams, with a road game against ETSU on Oct. 4 being the exception. The Hokies' final four ACC matches are all against teams that advanced in last year's tournament: UNC, Pitt, Notre Dame and Duke.

Schedule Notes

  • Virginia Tech will face Grand Canyon for the second time in program history and for the first time away from home. The Aug. 28 match against UCLA will be the first meeting between the two schools in men's soccer.
  • With the return of the Virginia Tech Tournament, Tech will renew its rivalry with Radford for the first time since Oct. 23, 2012.
  • Tech is seeking back-to-back victories against Virginia for the second time in program history.
  • The Hokies will face Princeton (Oct. 18) for only the second time ever and for the first time at Thompson Field.
