Hokies await No. 2 Demon Deacons for Friday night showdown

BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech welcomes No. 2 Wake Forest into the confines of Thompson Field on Friday night at 7:30 p.m., as part of a Hokies soccer doubleheader. Both the men's and women's soccer programs are participating in the "Party at the Pitch" night, which will feature games and giveaways for fans at Tech takes on two ACC opponents.

PARTY AT THE PITCH

  • Family-friendly fun for the women's soccer match at 5 p.m. followed by the men's team at 7:30 p.m.
  • Kids yard games at the front gate.
  • First 100 fans to each game receive Virginia Tech thunder sticks (noise makers).


THE SERIES

  • In a series that has been contested 27 times over the last 42 years, Wake Forest holds a 21-3-3 advantage. 
  • The Hokies are 2-7-2 at home against the Demon Deacons. Tech hasn't faced Wake Forest at home since 2018.


A WIN WOULD...

  • Be Mike Brizendine's 100th career win as head coach of the Hokies.
  • Be Virginia Tech's first win against Wake Forest since Sept. 19, 2014.
  • Be the Hokies'  third win in program history against a No. 2-ranked opponent. The last time Tech achieved the feat was in 2007 against No. 2 UConn in the Elite Eight.
  • Keep Virginia Tech from going winless in its first six games for the first time since 1984.


LAST TIME OUT

  • Virginia Tech seemed to have things figured out for 70 minutes in its last outing against Virginia. 
  • Conor Pugh scored his first goal of the season in the 22nd minute with a header from a Misei Yoshizawa free kick.
  • The Hokies held onto that lead until the 70th minute before the Cavaliers rattled off four goals in the span of 13 minutes. 
  • Yoshizawa added a late consolation goal in the 89th minute - his second of the season.
  • Jack Dearie received a red card, making him unavailable for selection on Friday night.
