Virginia Tech secures 2-0 shutout victory over Syracuse

BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech won their 10th match of the season in a 2-0 shutout win against Syracuse on Sunday, Oct. 23 at Thompson Field. The win marked the 300th program win for the Hokies women's soccer program established in 1993. 

The victory boosted Virginia Tech's record to 10-5-2 overall and 4-4-1 in ACC play. The Hokies went 5-3-2 at home this season after defeating Syracuse (8-7-2, 1-5-2) in the final regular-season home match. 

How it Happened

Virginia Tech took a 1-0 lead when Gabby Johnson recorded her third goal of the season in the 43rd minute. Johnson took the corner kick for the Hokies kicking the ball right on target and into the far side of the net. The Hokies held the shot advantage 9-4 heading into the second half. 

The Orange were forced to play one woman down in the 61st minute after the Orange's starting goalkeeper received a red card. Hokies took the advantage and extended their lead to 2-0 on a goal from Lauren Gogal, her first goal of the season.  Gogal scored in the 88th minute, assisted by Natalie Mitchell with her eighth assist of the season. 

Game Notes

  • Lauren Gogal scored her first career goal. 
  • Lauren Hargrove recorded five saves for the Hokies out of 11 total Orange shots. 
  • Hargrove earned her sixth clean sheet of the season. 
  • Virginia Tech remains unbeaten by Syracuse in their last seven games against each other since 2003. 
  • Hokies earned their 300th program victory
