BLACKSBURG – The Hokies finished day one against Ohio State, with the Hokie men just falling short to the Buckeyes 86-81. The women also fell short 115.5-55.5, but are taking momentum from Emma Atkinson's third-fastest swim in the nation into tomorrow's meet.
"I think we had a pretty good meet, some ups and downs," head coach Sergio Lopez Miro said. "This is Ohio State's first meet of the season, so I think they did very well. It was great for our team to race such a top team in the country. Our relay's were really good, so we're happy with those times and we're excited to see what happens tomorrow."
Tech Women
Emma Atkinson dominated backstroke. She finished first in the 200 back with a time of 1:54.67 which is currently the third fastest time in the nation. Atkinson started her day as the second leg of the 200 free relay with Caroline Bentz, Stephanie Sifferman and Caroline Foltz that placed fourth with a time of 1:34.14.
Fanni Gyurinovics was a consistent force in the pool today. She started off her day as the second leg of the 200 free relay with Madelyn Moore, Carmen Weiler Sastre and Emily Claesson that placed second with a time of 1:30.63. She then came in second in the 200 IM with a time of 2:00.63. Gyurinovics finished her day as the second leg of the 400 medley relay with Atkinson, Claesson and Weiler Sastre that finished second with a time of 3:38.88.
Chase Travis led the women in the 500 free with a time of 4:55.51 and placing second overall. Travis placed sixth in the 200 fly with a time of 2:08.11 behind Morgan Miller who placed fourth with a time of 2:04.38.
On the boards, Izzi Mroz dominated in the 1-meter finishing first with a score of 318.00.
Tech Men
Youssef Ramadan brought his speed with him to the pool today. He started his day off as the first leg of the 200 free relay with William Hayon, William Koeppen and Luis Dominguez that placed second with a time of 1:19.25. Ramadan then finished first in the 100 free with a time of 43.42.
Starting his day off strong, Carles Coll Marti came in first in the 200 IM with a time of 1:45.70. Marti than continued his winning streak as the second leg of the 400 medley relay with Forest Webb, Ramadan and Koeppen that placed first with a time of 3:10.67.
AJ Pouch led the Hokies in breaststroke. He placed first in the 100 breast with a time of 54.73. Pouch finished his day as the second leg of the 400 medley relay with Nico Garcia Saiz, Hayon and Mario Molla Yanes that placed third with a time of 3:17.10.
Jacob Fisher gave a strong performance on the boards. He finished first in the 3-meter event with a final score of 402.60.
Tomorrow
The Hokies continue their dual with Ohio State tomorrow morning at 10 a.m.
