Kitley leads Hokies to 67-41 win over Bucknell

BLACKSBURG, VA --Elizabeth Kitley notched a double-double with 22 points and 13 rebounds to help the Virginia Tech women's basketball team defeat the Bucknell Bison 67-41 at home Friday.

In addition to Kitley's strong showing, the Hokies (2-0) were led by Cayla King, who had eight points and two steals, and by Georgia Amoore, who added 11 points and four assists.

Virginia Tech collected 37 rebounds in Friday's game compared to Bucknell's 28, led by Kitley's 13 boards. The Hokies also put in work on the offensive glass, turning 16 rebounds into 17 second chance points.

Virginia Tech forced 20 Bucknell turnovers while committing just seven themselves in Friday's game. The Hokies turned those takeaways into 23 points on the offensive end of the floor. King's two steals led the way for Virginia Tech.

How It Happened

Virginia Tech started out the scoring by going on a 6-0 run, culminating in a bucket from Kitley, to take an early lead with 8:21 left in the first quarter. The Hokies then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 13-11 advantage. Virginia Tech relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down two shots to account for six of its 13 points.

Virginia Tech kept its first quarter lead intact before going on a 6-0 run starting at the 3:11 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Kayana Traylor, to increase its lead to 28-21. The Hokies proceeded to tack on one point to that lead and enjoyed a 31-23 advantage heading into halftime. Virginia Tech saw non-starters score five of its 18 total points off the bench in the quarter.

Virginia Tech continued to preserve its halftime lead before going on a 9-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Kitley, to expand its lead further to 40-26 with 4:51 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Bison had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Hokies still entered the fourth quarter with a 46-33 edge. Virginia Tech turned five offensive rebounds into six second chance points on the way to scoring 15 total points in the quarter.

Virginia Tech kept its lead intact before going on an 11-0 run to grow the lead to 57-35 with 5:09 to go in the contest. The Hokies kept expanding the margin and coasted the rest of the way for the 67-41 win. Virginia Tech took advantage of seven Bucknell turnovers in the quarter, scoring 10 points off of those takeaways.
