Soundbites: Weekly press conference (Duke)

Virginia Tech football met with the media for its weekly press conference on Tuesday, previewing its matchup at Duke. Read below to see what Tech head coach Brent Pry and linebacker Dax Hollifield had to say.

Head coach Brent Pry

Opening statement:
"First of all, I'd like to congratulate our women's soccer team. I was at the selection show yesterday. It was awesome. They were hanging on the edge of their seats. You know, they get to travel up and play West Virginia, so I am wishing them a ton of luck. It's also great to see both basketball teams get off on the right foot last night. Big wins here at home to start their seasons. Next, Hokie Nation was phenomenal on Saturday, supporting a team that's not having the type of record, not getting wins that everybody had liked to see, but they're coming out and supporting, cheering and involved, which impacts the games, so I appreciate them. I'm hoping they're going to turn out for this UVA game at the end of the season. We're near a sellout. It's going to be awfully important to the players. We've got three ball games left and we have got to keep improving."

On Tucker Holloway's game versus Georgia Tech:
"I knew he could do well by just watching him the week before. His confidence, his body position and fielding the ball. He worked on it all week. He was out there getting extra reps in after practice a couple days last week. He's just kind of the type of young man that goes above and beyond. There's no doubt that we were excited about him once we saw the work ethic, the mindset, the maturity and the speed. All those things that started to show face in preseason. He's worked really hard to earn an opportunity and I know he's put us on a tough decision. Tucker [Holloway] and I talked twice this week already. He's had conversations with Coach [Fontel] Mines, with his dad and we'll have another conversation here following the Duke game to kind of figure out his redshirt opportunity. We don't know what we want to do there yet. He'll play this week."

On how he's going to finish out the season:
"I'm just going to play my best three games. I'm just going to do what I have been doing all season. I just want to soak it all in. I will try to play my best three. It is what it is, but it's not how I wanted to go out. But I'll make the best of the situation."

On what he thinks went wrong versus Georgia Tech:
"We're getting better. We're so close but we just can't finish right now, so that's the really disappointing part. There were so many plays in each of the last three games that we could have made one play and the game's over, and we would have won it. We just didn't make those plays on third and 19. We're off the field right there and we win the game more than likely off that play. I always can't get off the field. We have to do that. When you have those opportunities, you have to take hold of them and win the game. We have to do that, and we haven't be able to do that this year."
