Hokie ClubCHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Virginia Tech's late comeback in regulation was canceled out in overtime by a pesky Boston College side, which defeated the Hokies, 70-65, in the Conte Forum on Wednesday night.
The Hokies had four players score in double figures, led by Justyn Mutts, who had 18 points, eight rebounds, two steals and two blocks. Sean Pedulla tacked on 18 points and five assists and Grant Basile chipped in as well with 13 points and six rebounds.
Darius Maddox pulled down a career-high five offensive rebounds to pace the Virginia Tech offense, which grabbed 16 boards and turned them into seven second chance points. However, Boston College hauled in 17 offensive rebounds and pocketed 13 second-chance points.
Tech took a five-point lead into the break after a frustrating offensive outing for both teams in the first 20 minutes. The hosts battled back and looked close to taking down the Hokies in regulation, but a late 11-2 run led Virginia Tech to its first overtime contest of the season. Boston College ultimately prevailed in the extra period with an 11-6 advantage.
How It Happened
After falling behind 8-6, Virginia Tech went on a 12-2 run, fueled by six points from Mutts, with 13:36 left in the first half to take an 18-10 lead. The Hokies then lost some of that lead, but still entered halftime with a 30-25 advantage. Virginia Tech did most of its first half damage in the paint, scoring 20 of its 30 points close to the basket. Struggling from deep, Tech went into the break shooting 1-10 from beyond the arc.
In the second half, Boston College proceeded to take a 57-48 lead before Virginia Tech went on a 9-0 run, finished off by Basile's three, to even the score at 57 all with 49 seconds to go in the contest. Neither team was able to finish the game in regulation and the contest headed to overtime tied at 59-59. Virginia Tech improved a bit from three-point range in the half, hitting four shots from deep to score 12 of its 29 points.
The Hokies couldn't get it going in overtime, specifically from deep (0-3) and surrendered a key offensive rebound late that allowed a dagger 3-pointer from Makai Ashton-Langford to lift Boston College to victory.
