Box Score (PDF)

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.  – Virginia Tech had one of its more efficient offensive outings of late on Wednesday night, but could not match Virginia, as the Hokies fell 78-68 to their in-state rivals.

The Hokies had all five starters score in double figures, led by Darius Maddox, who had 13 points. Grant Basile tacked on 12 points and Hunter Cattoor helped out with 11 points, six rebounds and five assists.

Virginia Tech dished out 19 assists, led by seven dimes from Justyn Mutts. The Hokies were able to protect the ball, as well, limiting themselves to eight turnovers – the smallest amount in ACC play this season. However, the Cavaliers held an edge in that category, as they only committed five turnovers.

How It Happened

After falling behind 19-10, Virginia Tech went on an 11-0 run with 12:18 left in the first half, culminating in a bucket from Maddox, to take a 21-19 lead. The Hokies then surrendered that lead, letting Virginia get into the half on a 10-3 run for a 40-31 score.

Virginia Tech started the second half strong, bringing the Cavalier's lead within two after Darius Maddox nailed a 3-pointer at the 15:17 mark in the second half, but that is the closest that Tech would make the game. Virginia used an advantage on the boards and getting to the charity stripe to extend its lead to as many as 14 in the second half.
