Kitley scores 20 points in Virginia Tech's 77-66 loss to Miami (FL)

CORAL GABLES, FL --Elizabeth Kitley totaled 20 points, but the Virginia Tech women's basketball team fell to the Miami (FL) Hurricanes 77-66 on the road Sunday.

The Hokies (13-3, 3-3) had two players score in double figures, led by Kitley, who had 20 points, eight rebounds and two blocks. Georgia Amoore tacked on 13 points and six assists and D'asia Gregg added eight points and six rebounds.

Kitley pulled down four offensive rebounds to pace an offense that racked up second chance opportunities for Virginia Tech, grabbing 10 boards and turning them into 14 second chance points.

How It Happened

Virginia Tech kept it close in the first quarter, but entered the second frame down 20-19.

Miami (FL) kept adding to that lead, building a 37-31 advantage before Virginia Tech went on a 5-0 run, highlighted by a bucket from Kayana Traylor, to narrow its deficit to 37-36. The Hokies were unable to narrow the gap any further, but did not lose ground either and entered halftime with a 39-38 deficit.

Virginia Tech's deficit continued to grow after halftime, and the Hokies faced a 60-54 disadvantage heading to the fourth quarter. Virginia Tech took advantage of three Miami (FL) turnovers in the quarter, scoring six points off of takeaways.

Virginia Tech came out of the third quarter break clicking on all cylinders, going on a 6-0 run, finished off by Kitley's layup, to even the score at 60 all with 7:47 to go in the contest. The Hokies could not turn their rally into a victory, as the Hurricanes outscored them 17-6 the rest of the way to hand Virginia Tech the 77-66 loss. Virginia Tech took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring six of its 12 points in the paint.
