NEW ORLEANS – Senior Rebecca Mammel, of Virginia Tech track and field, was named the USTFCCCA Southeast Region Women's Field Athlete of the Year, announced the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) on Thursday, Mar. 16.
"I am really happy for Rebecca," said associate head coach Andrew Dubs. "This is a great honor and well deserved after her record-breaking season. The work that she puts in on a daily basis combined with her competitive nature and positive attitude allows her to have all of the success that she has had throughout her career. I am happy to see all of her hard work paying off for her."
Mammel broke the Atlantic Coast Conference all-time record in the women's weight throw with a distance of 77' 8.75" (23.96m) at the Virginia Tech Challenge. At the ACC Indoor Track and Field Championships, Mammel set the meet record with a throw of 76' 5" (23.29m), claiming her second consecutive indoor conference title.
She earned her third career USTFCCCA First-Team All-American honors finishing seventh at the NCAA Indoor Championships launching the weight 73' 11.5 (22.54m) into the landing zone.
