RALEIGH, N.C. and COLUMBIA, S.C. - The Virginia Tech men's and women's track and field teams opened the 2023 outdoor season competing at the Raleigh Relays and the Weems Baskin on Thursday – Friday, March 23 – 24.
In Raleigh, freshman Katrin Brzyszkowska won the women's shot put with a distance of 51' 9.25" (15.78m) on her fifth attempt of the day. Brzyszkowska starts the outdoor season ranked 17th in the NCAA and third in the ACC. Katie Seyfang placed second putting a personal-best distance of 51' 1.75" (15.59m).
Senior Tyson Jones is ranked second in the ACC after recording a put of 60' 6.50" (18.45m) on Day One of the Raleigh Relays. Essence Henderson ranks second in the ACC women's discus with a mark of 183' 5.00" (55.92m).
Cierra Pyles kicked things off for the Hokies in South Carolina finishing second in the women's long jump invite with an outdoor personal-best mark of 19' 5.50" (5.93m). Pyles' mark ranks seventh in program history.
Varun Narayan and Caleb Stephens finished third and fifth in the men's long jump. Narayan jumped a distance of 23' 5.50" (7.16m), and Stephens attained a distance of 23' 4.00" (7.11m).
The Hokies return to action for the final day of the Raleigh Relays and Weems Baskin on Saturday. The men's distance squad opens their season competing at the Dr. Jack M. Toms Alumni Invitational in Lynchburg, Va.
